The Software Developer in Test (SDT) will work closely with our development and QA teams to ensure the application meets specified requirements. These responsibilities include design and implementation of test frameworks that simulate complex use cases and build tools that automate regression test cases. In addition to automation related tasks, the SDT will contribute to the overall project quality by participating in technical specification discussions, identifying and documenting test case scenarios that are good candidates for automation and working with developers to apply development best practices and methodologies.

The Software Automation team works alongside product managers, software developers and the QA team to gain an in-depth understanding of the challenging problems we are solving for our clients. We are responsible for creating automated UI, unit, load and stress test suites that exercise our enterprise class applications.

An ideal candidate will (have/be)

  • A strong technical background - have broad understanding of computer science fundamentals such as Object-Oriented Programming, Database concepts, web applications and software life cycle to name a few
  • Critical analytic and problem solving ability - can understand complex designs and/or architecture and come up with creative solutions that push automation to new heights
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills - can work with people that have varying technical expertise to understand business problems and explain proposed solutions in a clear and constructive manner
  • Highly Motivated and a self-starter – can work independently and have the desire to learn and apply new technologies to solve complex problems

Our Environment

We have a separate QA group (ratio of 1 QA to every 2 developers), software development group, software maintenance group, automated testing, and product manager teams. All of these teams are super dedicated folks who interact with our internal clients and help determine the business requirements and design for our applications.

The Team

We are very aggressive in adopting the latest and greatest technology. Consequently, Paylocity is an active Microsoft Gold Certified ISV Partner that frequently works directly with Microsoft in their Technology Adoption Programs, Early Adopter Program and going to their labs to test pre-release versions of their software in their Application Compatibility Testing programs. Paylocity is still relatively young as we are celebrating our 14th year in business. Our developers like what they do and the cool technology they get to work with – the average tenure on the team is about 4.5 years with very little turnover - we do a good job of keeping the team happy and engaged!

Our development teams work from home 2 days a week in a casual, collaborative environment.

Our software development team is responsible for creating, enhancing and supporting applications which Paylocity utilizes for our operations and our clients use to better manage their payroll, HR, time clock and enterprise application integration needs. The software development department is an established group with over 50 very talented individuals who are here for the long-term and are constantly thinking about growing and improving our processes. Our development department is responsible for the development of three products: Web Pay, our web-based payroll and HR software, Web Time, our web-based time & attendance software, and an Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) software.

Experience and Skills

  • Bachelors degree in computer science, engineering, technology or equivalent work experience
  • Must be proficient in object-oriented design, development and unit testing
  • Working knowledge of Software Quality Assurance practices, testing procedures, and software development life cycles
  • Must have at least 2 years hands-on experience with ASP.NET/C#, SQL (SQL Server 2008)
  • Experience with test frameworks such as NUnit, MSTest a plus
  • Experience with Selenium, WatiN and JavaScript a plus
  • Effective and diplomatic oral and written communication skills
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills
  • Payroll, time & attendance or HR benefits experience highly desirable
